Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; Save me, and I shall be saved, Jeremiah 17:14 |
January 24, 2012 Mission Diary Entry, Chiquimula, day 3
The engine of our 4-wheel drive pickup groaned and the suspension creaked as it picked its way around boulders and toiled up the mountainside. We stood in the back, holding on to the rails as a fine layer of brown dust coated our scrub suits and faces. Among them was the face of Teryl, a lactation nurse from the United States. Teryl had never been on a medical mission before and we had never had or since had a lactation nurse on our team. The final ascent would be made on foot as we made our way to our clinic site high in the clouds of Guatemala. |
As we approached our clinic site, a young woman named Rosa with fear in her eyes stood waiting among throngs of others in need of medical care. When it was finally her turn, Rosa presented a tiny, malnourished infant that was swaddled tightly in traditional colorful fabric. This was Rosa’s third child. The first two had died because she was unable to nurse them. Rosa had a problem with her nipples that made it difficult for the infant to nurse. |
Jesus changed everything for Rosa that day when our lactation nurse Teryl showed her how to provide life-giving mother’s milk for her baby. Each day we return to see her newborn infant beginning to thrive as Rosa was now able to nourish her. And God was Glorified. |
